Activity 1: Time and Duration Analog Clock

Problem: Last week, the teachers gave out lots of pop quizzes and tests to get the students ready for final. Find out the duration of each quiz based on the given riddles.

Question: Thursday – Science Quiz

When the quiz started, the hour hand was pointing closer to 9 while the minute hand was pointing at 9. When the quiz ended, the hour hand is pointing a little past 9 while the minute hand is pointing at 3. How long was the quiz?

Solution: Start time, the hour hand pointed closer to 9 meant it was almost 9 o’clock and the minute hand pointed at 9 meant it was 45 minutes. Therefore, the time the quiz started was at 8:45.

End time, the hour hand pointed a little past 9 meant it had past 9 o’clock and the minute hand pointed at 3 meant it was 15 minutes. Therefore, the time the quiz ended was at 9:15.

Time taken, 8:45 –> 9:00 was 15 minutes, 9:00 –> 9:15 was 15 minutes. In total, the science quiz was 30 minutes long.

Activity 2: Time and Duration 12 Hour Clock

Problem: In most places, bus schedules are often fixed. So, it’s best to know their schedule instead of waiting endlessly for the next bus. Here are some fun riddles. Hop on and let’s solve these riddles together.

Question: The bus to Town O comes every 25 minutes. Owen had waited for 5 minutes at the bus stop. If the clock shows 11:50 a.m., at what time will the bus arrive?

Solution: Find out how long must Owen wait. 25 minutes – 5 minutes = 20 minutes. Owen needs to wait another 20 minutes.

Find out at what time will the bus arrive. 11:50 a.m. + 20 minutes

11:50 a.m. –> 12.00 p.m. is 10 minutes. 20 minutes – 10 minutes = 10 minutes

12:00 p.m. + 10 minutes = 12:10 p.m. The next bus will arrive at 12:10 p.m.

Activity 3: Time and Duration 24 Hour Clock

Problem: Zara works as a volunteer at Digital Theater. She is given a list of movies that are airing. Help Zara to fill in the profile for each movie based on the given riddles written on the list.

Question: Movie 11 time slot

This movie starts at 22:40 and the run time is 105 minutes long. At what time will the movie end?

Solution: Convert 105 minutes to hour and minutes, 105 minutes ÷ 60 = 1 hour and 45 minutes. The movie is 1 hour and 45 minutes long.

Find out the end time, 22:40 + 1 hour and 45 minutes

22:40 –> 23:00 is 20 minutes. 1 hour 45 minutes – 20 minutes = 1 hour 25 minutes

23:00 –> 00:00 is 1 hour. 1 hour 25 minutes – 1 hour = 25 minutes

00:00 + 25 minutes = 00:25. This movie ends at 00:25.
