Activity 1: Reading Time and Schedule

Problem: Zara is working as a volunteer at Timmie’s Farm. She is given a list of tasks to do for that day. Help Zara to identify the time that she needed to do each task based on the riddles written on the list.

Question: Feed the chickens.

When the hour hand is a little past 7 while the minute hand points at 3. What time is it?

Solution: If the hour hand points a little past 7 means it is past 7 o’clock. If the minute hand points at 3 means it is 15 minutes. Therefore, the feeding time for the chickens is at 7:15.

Activity 2: Converting 24 Hour Clock

Problem: Zara is at Dash Airport. The boarding time is written in the 24-hour clock system. Help Zara to convert the time into 12-hour clock for each flight based on the schedule shown on the screen.

Question: Boarding time for Flight A020 is 20:40. Draw the hour hand and the minute hand to show the boarding time of this flight and state the time.

Solution: Convert 20:40 to 12 hour clock, 20:40 = 8:40 p.m.

To draw 8:40 on an analog clock, the hour hand must point a little past 8 and closer to 9, while the minute hand must point at 8.

Activity 3: Time Difference and 24 Hour Clock

Problem: Zara lives in Paris (UTC+1). Every day she chats with her pen-pals online. Help Zara to find out the time for each of her pen-pal’s city based on the time zone given by them.

Question: It is 23:10 in Paris. Zara is chatting with Jennifer from Miami (UTC-5). Draw the hour hand and the minute hand to show the time in Miami and state the time.

Solution: Find the time difference between Paris and Miami, +1 – (-5) = 6. The time difference is 6 hours.

Find the time in Miami, 23:10 – 6 hours = 17:10. The time in Miami is 17:10.

Convert 17:10 to 12 hour clock, 17:10 = 5:10 p.m. It is 5:10 p.m. in Miami.

To draw 5:10 on an analog clock, the hour hand must point a little past 5, while the minute hand must point at 2.
