Subtraction within 10 is the second operation topic that all children will have to go through. This topic is generally taught in preschool. However, it’s also not a surprise if you find not one but several first graders struggling with this topic.
Here are 5 ways that you could try with your students.
- Using pictures and writing subtraction stories
- Pictorial activities help your students to understand the concept of crossing out and allow them to write a complete subtraction story/statement.
- Find missing part with number bond
- Number bonds help your students to understand the relationship between parts and total and find the missing part.
- Count using number line
- Using number line helps to emphasize the decrease value of a number when subtracting from it.
- Subtract by counting back
- This method can train your students to do simple mental math in their head without any visual aid.
- Subtract by counting on
- For question like 9 – 7, it is quicker to count on 7 to 9 than to count back 7 from 9. This method teaches your students to not just count back but to count on when the differences are small.
