5 Easy Ways to teach Addition within 10

Addition within 10 is the first operation topic that all children will have to go through. This topic is generally taught in preschool. However, it’s also not a surprise if you find not one but several first graders struggling with this topic.

Here are 5 ways that you could try with your students.

  1. Using pictures and writing addition stories
    • Pictorial activities help your students to understand the concept of combining and allow them to write a complete addition story/statement.
  2. Find missing total with number bond
    • Number bonds help your students to understand the relationship between parts and total and find the missing total/whole.
  3. Count using number line
    • Using number line helps to emphasize the increase of a value when adding two numbers together.
  4. Add by counting on
    • This method can train your students to do simple mental math in their head without any visual aid.
  5. Add from the larger number
    • For question like 3 + 7, it is quicker to count on from 7 than to count on from 3. This method teaches your students to count on from the larger number than from left to right to save their time.
